A diet which is high in fat, moderate in protein, and moderate to low carbohydrates is called a paleo diet, or caveman diet. This diet is well-loved because it’s not complicated – you won’t be encouraged to count calories or control your potions. So if you’re interested to get started, start by reading the simple guidelines we have below.
One. Eat loads of saturated fats like butter, coconut oil, or clarified butter. And so long as it comes from well-treated animals, lard, lamb tallow, duck fat, and beef tallow are also very good. Not so much for cooking though, you can use avocado oil, macadamia oil, and olive oil in salads as you get good fats from them as well.
Two: You must eat decent amounts of animal protein such as eggs, poultry, wild caught fish, shellfish, pork, red meat, and organs like heart, kidney and liver. Go on ahead and eat the fatty cuts and high-protein meals. Learn to cook them with bones too.
Three: Eat fresh or frozen vegetables generously – have them raw, cook them, or combine them with fat. Starchy vegetables like yams and sweet potatoes are also advisable as they good sources of non-toxic carbohydrates.
Four: Eat enough fruits and nuts. Try your best to stick mostly to nuts high in omega-3, low in omega-6, and low in total polyunsaturated fat (i.e. macadamia nuts), and fruits high in antioxidants and low in sugar (i.e. berries). Consider reducing fruits and nuts altogether if you are suffering from digestive problems, autoimmune disease, or if you really want to lose weight faster.
Five: As much as possible, purchase pasture-raised and grass-fed meat from local farms which are also environmentally conscious. If that’s not really an option for you, choose lean meat cuts then and get fat supplements from coconut oil, butter or clarified butter. Also, if possible, stick to local, organic and/or seasonal vegetables and fruits.
Six: Do not ingest added sugar, soft drinks and any packaged beverages and sweets, not even fruit juices. Basically, if it’s in a box, don’t put it in your mouth.
Seven: Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a meal (or two), just eat when you’re hungry.
Eight: Eliminate all legumes and cereal grains such as oats, corn, barley, rye, soy, peanuts, wheat, beans and peas.
Nine: Apart from butter and may heavy cream, you don’t really need dairy products – but if you really can’t help it, stick to full-fat, fermented and/or raw dairy.
Ten: Enjoy life and avoid stress – get enough sleep, smile, play in the sun, keep on learning, explore, travel, don’t over-exercise, relax, have fun and be daring.
